I hard wired, just crimped onto the hot wire that controls garage door opener above the rear view mirror. The ground wire is merely bolted to screw that attaches to metal body. It was a relatively easy job and although the V-1 is not hidden from view, it is somewhat protected and obscured by tinted glass sitting high up near the rearview mirror. It needs to sit up high so that the rear facing detector can work unobstructed. I doubt BMW would/could void the warranty since no wires were cut and power consumption of the V-1 is well below the circuits' amperage rating.

do it yet. As posted by Digi a few days ago, I followed the instructions about dropping down the light cluster from the overhead console just to explore the procedure and tools required. It was really easy to do this and locate the correct wires etc., but I didn't wire the radar detector harness in because I haven't gotten a firm answer from the dealer as to whether this could void any part of the electrical warranty. In the mean time, I found what I think is a good location for mounting the detector with the suction cups and the "smart"(IMO dumb) cord-the lower left side of the windshield. I removed the inspection sticker(can be done in 15 min with new razor scraper without damaging the sticker), placed the detector so that it rests on the dash but is still above the back edge of the hood and routed the curled smart cord under the steering wheel by crimping the cord into the seams of the lower instrument panel to the left & right of the steering column. The cord is not intrusive in this position and when the detector is removed, the detector end of the cord can be draped over the steering column and the cig-plug end can be tucked in under the steering column. The cord is almost invisible in this position. The inspection sticker was then centered above the suction cups and slightly hid the detector-however, IMO the detector is always viz. whether it is next to the rearview mirror or elsewhere. Comments please, especially about voiding the warranty if hard wiring is done. Thanks.
