There is a remote 'radar detector' which goes in the front of the car, usually within the grill area. You simply run a wire through the firewall to the display unit which can be hidden under the dash but still visible to the driver. If you want the detector to turn on automatically each time the car starts, simply attach the power wire to the ignition line (you might have to ask someone this)... otherwise you can attach it through a fuse to the battery. If you want to use the laser detector, probably you have to pull out part of the interior to hide the wire which goes from the top of the front windshield down the side to the display unit. But in all seriousness, the laser detector is not going to prevent many tickets as they generally aim for the bumper/license plate area and once you are hit, you're hit. Only if it hits the laser detector first and they don't get a readout, might you have time to slow down.
Nevertheless, any professional... and DO find a upscale professional shop, can do this if you don't want to do it yourself. I had mine done for a total of about 350 dollars and well worth it. Plus, it looks much better than having a radar detector hanging from your ceiling!
