The reason to live without a remote unit is that the Valentine One has worked the best out of the 4 or so different units that I've had. It's also won every time I've seen a comparison in a magazine. As far as your laser comment goes, I would only say that having the laser detector protects you when the car in front or near you gets hit with it and then yours goes off and you slow down...
