In the SCUBA diving community, the saying is that you have a greater likelyhood of a fatality traffic accident driving to the dive site, than you do seeing a Great White shark.

When I take people rock climbing for their first time and they ask questions about the safety of the sport, I give them a very similar response.

(BTW, national fatality statistics do support that traffic related fatalities are the biggest danger most Americans face. See link below. Of course, these stats don't translate well into an accurate estimate for the chance of dying on one drive of a certain length. Obviously people spend a lot more time driving than SCUBA diving or rock climbing.)
