Sorry, you WILL need snows. Driving straight seems to be barely adequate, but stopping and cornering is the pits. Unfortunately, these elements are essential to driving. After driving a Trooper for 3 years and getting just about anywhere, I was a bit disappointed but aware of the potential problem. I bought 17" rims w/ Michelin Pilot-Alpin tires for winter months.
