It didn't help matters that the dealer offered me a paltry $20,000 for my car.
I did. In September '00. I actually ordered the X5 last July and took delivery shortly after Labor Day. I think it is one of the best decisions I ever made.
I had a (Build Date - June'97) 528i, 30K miles, silver, grey lthr., loaded. It was a great car, but my work takes me more on the road (Route 85 and 77 through NC) and I hated being so low to the ground around all the 18 wheelers, SUVs, and broken down farm trucks.
I like the X5,4.4,Sport cause it drives just like the BMW sedans (The handling is supreme!) and the V8 punch is a nice addition over the 528 6cyl. It's just a higher up version of a 5(40) really.
I have had a couple of minor annoyances with it, but my dealer has superb service (Leith BMW in Raleigh, NC). I can give you my own 2 cents on service in another thread.... As well as everyone else.
IMHO: If you are looking for the same sportiness and quality of vehicle as the 528, and you want to ride taller, then this is a great step up. Fit and finish is pretty damn close to a German car. And again, the handling. You can drive it almost as hard as the 528 through turns (and exit ramps). Wait till you chase a sports car through a few S's and WHoA! They won't believe a SAV just did that! And the brakes! AMaZing brakes.
Also, I got 31K for my car selling it myself. It was pristine.
7000 miles and lovin' it!

Rich
