I have a 3 week old X5 3.0 silver with black interior,non-sport and love this SAV. It's my 1st BMW and SAV, so you can imagine my joy in owning the X. This site [and Edmund's] helped alot so thanks to all.
I have the standard stero, and drive in the NYC metro area.
FM and cd play very clearly. AM reception has lots of static, sounds like a blown speaker, but it's not. Dealer listened to it and said could be amp. or wiring? When I asked if he saw this in other X5's, he responded " Not in this BMW model" which leads me to believe it may happen in some BMW's.
Any other experience?
Also plan on changing the oil at 4,000 miles to get rid of "break-in" oil. 15,000 miles seems to long to wait! has anyone done this?
The AM side of the radio in all BMW's is otoriously poor! They currently have a service bulletin out on the amplifier which resides in the top of your cargo space door. They have a new one which they'll swap out with you. The brakes make noise on the AM radio. If you push the dealer enough he will get help from the factory rep and do the following:(besides replace the amplifier and put a resistor in line with the battery)
1. Install aluminum foil tape between the third brake light and it's mount.
2. Wrap the antenna coax with foil tape where it runs close to the radio amp and the nav computer. This is for the noise heard while depressing the brake and while driving.
3. Install ground cables on the engine exhaust system because it is hung on rubber mounts and becomes an antenna for the various noises, including spark plug noises by way of the exhaust.
Good luck,
Serge
