Serge: Thanks for the help. This is an amazing site. The dealer offered to replace the amp but wasn't too specific about the other things he would do. Armed with your info will make it easier to work with him.
It's funny because he 1st said he didn't hear any static in the shop. Then he insisted it was the brakes, which it wasn't. So I sat in the car with him and of course it was immpossible to not hear the static. The lesson is: check this website, and don't give in to "that's the way it's supposed to be" from the dealer.
