Seriously, if you want something practical, the X5 isn't it! Even the 3.0 will "only" get 20 MPG in the best cases, and around town or in mixed driving it will be much less. If you drive 10k miles per year then you'll pay around $1058/year at $1.80/gallon and 17 MPG. At $2.50/gallon it would be $1470/year, for a difference of $412. That's not much considering the price of the X5, and anyone who thinks it is probably shouldn't be driving a vehicle like this in the first place.

I lived in the UK last year where gas was typically 70-80 pence per liter. Depending on the exchange rate, that's around $4.00 to $4.50 a gallon. The Brits are as car-mad as the folks in the US and drive just as much, despite the higher prices for gas, cars, and most everything else related to driving.

When I was a kid in the 70s my grandfather used to scare me by saying that gas would be $5/gallon by the mid-80s and that the world would run out of fuel by the year 2000. While he was a nice guy and pretty smart, he was very wrong on this point. As were lots of others who made wild "end of the world is near" style predictions.

Cheers,
