Almost all the Bimmers I have driven have this characteristic. There is a small switch on the floor and when you press the pedal all the way down the switch is activated. It tells the engine to forget the current adaptive transmission and floor it to kick that neon's ass that is infront of you. (the click you hear is when that switch is pressed)

You then very nicely wave at the neon and pass it rather quickly with a big smile.
