In the June 2001 issue of "Bimmer" they have a four page road test of the 3.0 with manual box.The review is filled with comments like "awkward gearbox, balkiness, tippy, body roll is plentiful, back road driving out of the question, highly uninspiring chassis. In summary they say that this 3.0 X5 "turns out to be the most truck-like BMW SAV we've driven. Combine the clumsy gearbox with the mushy chassis, and the sensation is much more Land Rover-ish than we would have ever anticipated" I don't think they will be on BMW's Christmas card list!
