For what its worth, just completed a 886 mile round trip to Hilton Head. X5 3.0 mpg for the circuit was 24.0 and for the return 24.2 mpg.
X5 had 3400 miles on it starting out. Terrain varied from flat to I-40 over the Smoky mountains. Speeds were between 70 and 80, mostly around 75, but 60's in construction areas and up to 90 for while somewhere in SC.

I'm pleased. Have a 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee AWD with the 4.0 liter 6, (195hp) and never have achieved 20 mpg, even when trying to by running at 55 mph.

Can't speak for the 4.4i, but the 3.0i does just fine. And the straight 6 is smooth.

Incidentally, have had no problems with the X5, period. Plenty of headaches with the 330xi, which is a month younger than the X5.
