This happened to my mother last Friday and on her behalf I would like to check to see if anyone else has had this problem!
My mother traded in her '98 RR 4.6HSE last week for a '01 X5 3.0. She was very happy for approx 108 miles and 2 days. After playing golf on Friday (a day with temps in the low 80's) she parked in the garage and went inside the house. After approximately 45 minutes she smelled smoke strongly in the house and tried to locate the source. Finally checking the garage she found the source, it was filled with smoke and she opened the garage door the clear things up. Smoke was coming out from under the hood at the front and small flames were leaping out of the kidney grill!
She put out the fire with a garden hose (I will have to get her a fire extinguisher I guess) and called the dealership immediately. I checked it out on Sunday afternoon and the fan shroud is a melted mess, looks like the fan motor toasted for some reason. All else appears OK, except for a nasty burnt smell (plastic) around the vehicle.
I checked with her this morning and the dealer's flat bed truck picked up the X5 at approximately 9.30am. Anyone else had this happen? Between my parents and I we have owned 7 BMWs over the past 15 years and have never experienced anything like this.
When I get the report from the dealer I will follow-up with another post if enough people are interested.
Best Regards und RECHS FAHREN!
