Have not seen the BMW carrier. Using the Yakima swing away hitch carrier I used on my suburban. Holds 4 bikes and works excellant. If I didn't have it I'd do what you're doing and check out the BMW hitch.

Is the Hitch-Mounted Bike Carrier from BMW accessories the only way to go?
