I don't know where you live, but I live in Santa Fe with a lot of dirt roads. The cars I see with those types of racks have the paint worn-out under the foam from the friction of dust.

I also don't won't to go to the expense of a hitch and rack, but I will. Roof racks can prove expensive. After a long mountain bike ride I was very tired and while lifting the bike high above my head it dropped. It was not the X5, but still a nasty scratch to repair.

I believe I will try the Drawtite hitch without paying for the electrical hook-up. I think it will be money well spent.


Don't want to spend extra money on hitch installation. Can these types of bike racks work on X5?
