Escort 8500 install? (archive)

I have an Escort 8500 that I'd like to install with the power taken from the overhead panel, as is shown at http://people.ne.mediaone.net/bmwx5/radar.htm, but the Escort has a funky power connector they call the "Smart Cord." I can order one without a coiled cord and cigarette lighter adapter, but it still has a large power thingy (technical term) on the end of it. Anybody installed one of these and either: eliminated the power thingy and just wired it directly, or found a way to stuff the power thingy into the overhead light compartment. Thanks in advance for tips from anyone who's dealt with this install before.
