X5 vs 330xi Sport Wagon (archive)

I'm trading in my 98 ML320 next year and was pretty convinced X5 3.0 was next car for me. However, one of 2 kids is off to college so I really don't need anything that big. I'm seriously considering the 330xi Sport Wagon as an option. Anyone else make this comparison???

Clearly the X5 is a bigger, heavier, different vehicle -- with a higher price to match. But the 330xi with slightly less ground clearance still seems to be a capable snow touring vehicle. Lower roof height also appeals as I carry bikes a lot. I also like that I can get more stand-alone options (like like myrtle wood trim for $500) and the Euro colors like steel grey metallic and black sapphire metallic.

Thanks in advance for any non-inflammatory thoughts....
