I asked about this a couple of days ago but received no reply.

If you look behind the covers, you will notice that they feed to the lower grill opening. My dealer said that if removed, they help keep the brake rotor cool.

Most 4.4 models should have them both removed and most 3.0 models will have one or both in position.

I was also told that if you do any towing, it is a good idea to remove the covers.
