The handling was superlative as long as I contained myself within the prevailing conditions. I drove very cautiously and found that the X5 responded well as long as I maintained sound winter driving skills.

But, here is the caviet. I live in California. I do not drive in winter conditions here. I have to go to the mountains to have this kind of fun. So if you live in the mid-west where November through March you have to deal with winter conditions, then I recommend mud/snow tires. It just makes sense.

The reason for my little test drive was to see if I could get out of the mountains in the case where it was clear roads when I arrived to the mountains, then a change of weather produced bad conditions. I needed to find the limits of the X5 in these conditions.
