Assuming you have a 4.4, I tend to agree with Digi on the firmware upgrades over gearing changes. If you have a 3.0, the software upgrades will not give you any more power. With the 4.4, a simple upgrade gets you an avg 8-10Hp more and avg 10 lb-ft of torque, plus 500 RPM more in the redline before upshifting. This should give you the few tenths of a second difference you are looking for (while still maintaining your warranty).

The other complication with a gear change is that you would have to make a similar change to your front end as well, since the X5 has full time 4WD. That might get pretty hairy because you want the front wheels rotating at exactly the same rate as your rears. With a Mustang, things are easier, since the front wheels don't have drive axles. (I think that the main reason for the transmission software upgrades on most cars with a gear upgrade is to re-calibrate the speedometer.)

Personally, I want to keep everything stock at least through my warranty period. I'm sure that in a few years there will be many performance upgrades that will help get way over 300Hp out of the 4.4's - superchargers, etc.
