The reason stated was that BMW has instead decided to hold off for an early (June 2002) introduction of a facelifted X5 sporting the new 4.4i from the upcoming 745i (322 hp, 334 lb ft I believe) that will eclipse the performance of the current 4.4i by at least half a second and set it on top on the performance war with the ML55.
He also said he suspects they may eventually move the M5 engine (increase displacement: possibly 5.4l mated to a 6-speed!) to the X5's as an M model to take on the new Cayenne 450 hp turbo V8. It seems BMW has viewed the new Porsche as more of a threat than the Mercedes.
If anyone has heard anything similar, please share it with forum, I for one am anxious to know what will happen to my 4.6is deposit. =/
