One of the recent car magazines had an X3 article in it and said that due to the demand for the X5 that the 4.6 was delayed indefinitely. Of course none of us will probably be able to find out the real story, and as we've seen even the dealers often don't know what's going on.

Personally, I think that the new 4.4 engine will be close enough to the 4.6 in performance and may give BMW time to distinguish it a bit further. I also think that a real "M" version is what they should go for, not some halfway thing.
