The Lexus RX 300 is essentially an all-wheel drive Camry with a lower payload capacity and less robust undercarriage than the X5. Take a long, careful look underneath the two vehicles and come to your own conclusions re the difference in build quality.

We comparison-shopped the RX against the MDX when we were more serious about the latter. We finally settled on the X5, which blows away both on safety and performance measures.

Consumerreports.org's reliability ratings put the RX300 about fourth on their list, with Toyota, Infiniti and Nissan models rated higher. Mercedes M Class is close to the bottom. X5 is too new to measure reliability, but CR puts it at the very top of its rankings of 15 full-size SUVs and gives it a "Promising" designation. The RX 300 was third on this list. It also rated the X5 the best of four SUVs it road-tested extensively. The Ford Excursion was at the bottom of both of these lists.

BMW consistently scores at or near the top of CR's reliability ratings in other vehicle categories. Its 3 series was also awarded their highest rating this year, in the Upscale Sedan category, besting Lexus, Mercedes, Infiniti and Volvo.
