I have a 2001 X5 3.0i and it is my first BMW also. No problems to date with 12,000 miles. I purchased mine in November 2000 and have been loving it every minute! The problems you have seen on this board have been minor except the fire/fan situation. And to put that into perspective, to date there have only been 3 or 4 X5's to catch fire which equals 0.01% (1/100 of a %) defect ratio which is very good in any business. This is a high performance vehicle which needs proper care not unlike a fighter jet, but the maintanace program takes care of that and the warranty takes care of anything else.
