We have over 12K miles on our 3.0i X5 and it's behaved flawlessly to date. There was a "service engine soon" light that wouldn't shut off, but there were no associated performance problems. If you want the safest and best-performing SUV on the market, you should be very happy with your X5

BMW owners are not your typical car owners; check out the link below for a perspective on this. We tend to be more "involved" with our vehicles than average, and this model is no exception.

People on this site are hyperventilating about the fan switch issue, but not without cause. BMW should be more forthcoming about the fan problem. However, one needs only to look at the Mercedes M Class reliability record (see consumerreports.org) to realize that this issue is likely to be a tempest in a teapot in comparison.
