I have read on this board more than once remarks from X5 owners stating that if build quality and reliability is what you want in a vehicle, one should buy a Lexus, not a bimmer.

I have never owned a bimmer (I have owned a Lexus) but I find this mindset hard to understand, for if I decide to pay $50K for an X5, I would just assume it would be extremely reliable.

Am I being naive? If build quality and reliability is important to me should I look at something other than the X5? I am not enough of a driving enthusiast to be happy with frequent trips back to the dealer for adjustments and fixes.

I am struggling with this issue and any thoughts you can share on this are greatly appreciated.

I have decided to bite the bullet and order a 2002. For a variety of reasons the X5 appeals to me more that any other vehicle out there currently. Thanks again for all the feedback, both positive and negative. If nothing else what I have read on this board gives me some clues on what kind of potential problems I should look for.
