Forget the media frenzy...they don't want any more owner frenzy with the short supply of replacement fans. This isn't like an explosion or something you can't pull over and stop normally and walk away from (when you see the smoke rising from the front of your new X5 -hehe), but I wouldn't park in a garage or near things that I didn't want consumed by fire if I had any symptoms (a very new car, Aux fan not turning with AC on, poor AC cooling, etc.). If you must park in a garage, just make sure the smoke detectors are working well, and make the homeowners insurance payments (actually, BMW would be paying for any damage). :)
