Observation on 'Tailgate Open' problems (archive)

When I wax my X5 I pull the license plate assembly off so I can wax behind it. Pretty anal I know!. But last week when I reassembled, afterwards I was getting these warnings kinda frequently when I accessed the cargo area. I then noticed that the upper tailgate was closed about 3/4 inch over my license plate holder. I installed the assembly upside down. I just made the adjustment and now there are no more 'tailgate open' warnings.

I wonder if at dealer prep they are installing these things upside down and folks are getting their tailgates re-aligned for nothing.

If those guys at photopoint weren't such greedy pricks, I could post some pictures.
