X5 4.4i Oil Consumption? (archive)

I just took delivery on a new X5 4.4i - as with any new
vehicle I ever acquired, I checked all of the fluid levels
before I drove it off the lot. Everything was topped off,
no apparent problems. Within the first 500 miles, I got
the "Check Oil Level" message on the MFD, and immediately
pulled over to have a look. After waiting a few minutes for
the oil to drain back into the pan, I checked the oil level,
all was well. Over the course of the next several days,
and another 500 miles, the "Check Oil Level" message came
and went on the MFD, and each time I checked the level on
the dipstick. On the final check, the oil level had dropped
a bit, maybe slightly less than a half-quart low.

I know that some oil consumption in the first 1000 - 1500
miles is normal for some new vehicles, however... I called
the BMW service technician at my dealer, who insisted that
it was normal for this vehicle to consume a quart of oil
every 1500 miles! I find this hard to believe...

Anyone on the board have similar experience, or do I need
to request that my service tech get drug tested, or
at least stop smoking crack while on the job?
