Carl,
I own 2 2001 4.4 X5's as well as a 2001 M3. I have had only 2 minor issues with the X5's including the 3.0 we traded in on one of the 4.4's.

All of them had the "Tailgate Open" light, it has been to the dealer twice { all three} for adjustment to no avail. I have on my X5 a small issue of an annoying banging of the passanger seatbelt against the b-Pillar.

The gas milage is horrible { of course the DINAN upgrades have my foot on the pedal} But it is very fast, handles better than my AMG C43 did and the brakes are outstanding. Styling is the best of the SUV's on the market and I feel they were sound investments.
Of course the fire issue is a cocern, however I live in southern california and there a zillion about and of the three dealers I frequent Creveir, Irvine BMW and Long beach none have had a fire issue with a X5.

The A/C works very well and build/finish is excellent. The price difference is really a question for your own checkbook then a forum. I drove the ML55 AMG, Ford Lighting and Jeep HO...I found the X5 a clear winner with the ML a close second...however with even with the AMG enhancements it still looked like a milk delivery truck on steroids.
Good Luck.
