Joe,

Thanks alot for taking the time and emailing this information.

My first was a 2002 and I had to do the same, each fall and spring, because those cars were very notorious for their very very light rear end. It took BMW years, seriously, before they solved the problem to some extent.

One more question, but Which mfr did you go with for the snows and why?

Thanks!

Bruce

PS. Good luck with your X5!

you get out on the Island - I'm about 60 miles north of Manhattan and last year was pretty bad. My Volvo with 4 snows and front-wheel drive made it up most of the hills with almost no problem, but not my driveway. My wife's minivan (also FWD) but no snows couldn't make it up the drive and had more trouble on the hills... So for my situation, this year she has a Town&Country AWD minivan, and I'm going for the X5 with snows.

I have spoken with Alpina who lives in Jersey City (where I work, BTW), and his snowfall may be about the same as yours. He does not have snows and did okay with the 19" sport rims -- although he was contemplating a second set.

Guess it comes down to spending an additional $2500 (about $1000 for the snows and $1500 for the rims). My last BMW I would mount and dismount the snows every fall and spring, and I had the car for over 10 years... I spent more on mounting than rims a few times over!

Email if you want more info.

Joe

Joe,

I am also getting a 4.4, spt pkg, same 19" wheels, but have not ordered the extra Snow set. I live south of where you live, on L.I.

Whats your opinion on whether I should order the extra set or not. My dealer did not think I needed to order them.

Thanks,

Bruce
Getting my 4.4 in November - but I ordered with the 19" Y-Spoke as I love the look and handling of the 19"... but I need snows to get up my driveway and the hills in the NY suburbs, so I ordered 18" rims, and Blizzak LM-22 snows (that just arrived Friday. So I'll have sneakers for the summer, and boots for the winter! :-)

Getting my X-5 in Nov.I live outside Phila.our winters are usually dry, some snow and ice.My questions are:
Can I get away with new Michelins this year?(std 17"tires)
What do you think is better, Dunlap M2 or Michelin Pilot Alpins
Is the tirerack the best source
