Well, I was bored studying for boards..... (oxymoronish!)!.. and it was a nice day, and i was thinking about ways to distract myself, and i went outside, and decided to check the battery level on the M roadster and X5.
Surprise. Surprise. Surprise.
The M roadster battery indicator said "green" (=good charge). I pulled the stickers off the "BMW MAINTENENCE FREE BATTERY" as I remembered the day my 1993 E36M3's battery died, and it was b/c it was empty of H2O, despite being "maintenance free", and checked the levels, and all 6 need to be topped off, with about 1.75 cups of distilled H2O.
I decided to check the battery on the X which requires removing the spare and the self levelling system, and the battery Charge indicator was black, indicating "INCOMPLETE CHARGE". I pried the stickers off, and had to unbolt part of one of the supports underneath the tire but over the battery to check to the leftmost compartment. The battery took 7+ cups of H2O to top off, and I left the X running to see if it would charge. More than likely, the battery will be shot.
Moral of the story: NO SUCH THING AS A BMW MAINTENENCE FREE BATTERY. And, by the way, the warranty does NOT COVER THE COST OF A NEW BATTERY.
Hopefully the X battery will work, but at least the M Roadster's is saved.
Keep in mind, both cars are 2001 models, and that the X is 14 months old, and the M Roadster is 4 months old...........
yikes!
