I own an X5 3.0 sport 5-speed for 18 months.
quick observations are:

First gear is useless if you never taken the car off road, its a crawling gear, too low. Our car will never see off road, We need a 4x4 for the snow to be able to get to work. We just skip first half of the time. In traffic it can be useful, Thus to me it is a four speed with a low range gear.

Gas milage is around 19-21, much better that the Jeep it replaced

Power is able, I don't do engine mods.

Handling is GREAT!

The comment of it needing a 6-speed or another gear is VERY accurate.

When I got my '01 530is 5-speed I said this is what the tranny should be like in the X5!

I have added the phone, running boards, and trailer hitch.

and I have learn alot from this board, thanks
