am about to get out of 98 ml320. am comparing mdx, x5, and 02 ml. i keep thinking that ML is compromise between value (MDX) and fun (X5) and between reliability (MDX) and engineering fun (x5). i like the X5, and i like German engineering but can't deal with another lemon like the 98 ML. So -- for those who made comparisons, i would like your feedback and i would like reliability feedback as well. U can skip the part about the garage burning down -- i am making the assumption that issue has been resolved...thx

I tested the vehicles mentioned extensively before deciding to purchase the 4.4i. I would agree with your assessment in general. I think the Japanese still have the best quality (measured in terms of defects). That said, while my "head" kept telling me to buy the MDX, my "heart" kept yelling for the X5. The driving dynamics are not even comparable to the other vehicles. I believe the ML has worked out its quality flaws -- a service guy at MB dealer said 98 and 99 models are highly defective, while 00 and on are fine. However, the ML was ultimately designed as an offroad vehicle softened for on-road use. In contrast, BMW started out designing an on-road vehicle capable of light-duty off roading. I submit this is the better approach for the way most people drive.

Hard to go wrong, and of course many people here own the X5. But having gone through the same decision process, I am completely confident the X5 is the way to go if you love driving. My two cents.
