I dont think the trans is made by GM on an e39 (archive)

The trans in the 540 is GM - but not in X5 (I think it is a ZF unit???). The auto in my 540 held up well for @45k miles. BUT! I like the trans in the X5 much better.

I would guess that the 4.4 puts more stress on a trans - 324lb-ft of torque will do that. But I did not have durability problems of any kind w/trans.
