The circles other than reliability are based on actual CR testing. Get a good vehicle to test and it is among the best on the road as we all know. Ask a few thousand owners to report problems (as they do for reliability) and you get a big black dot based on actual consumer usage over a representative sample as opposed to CR's anectdotal sampling of a single vehicle.
I took a look at the X-5 review in this new issue. What I found really strange was the X-5 received all red circles or clear circles in all areas but no black circles. This means it did pretty well since a full red circle is the best rating possible.
Black circles are the worst rating. Then when they gave a future reliability rating. They gave a full black circle? Now how do all reds and clears average into a black?
I know the x-5 has problems this makes no sense according to their own ratings. Take it all with a large grain of salt. :)
