I have an x5 and a 528, both with sport package. So I can't comment on the vehicle without it. The x5 handles very well, and I do not find the ride to be rough because of it. The bigger tires and wheels add to its handling strength. To me, buying a bmw is for its handling, and the sports pkge. just makes it better.
