Here is an unofficial and admittedly incomplete list of letter designators BMW has used.

Suffix:
A = automatic (2002A, 525iA)
C = coupe (330Ci); or convertible (325iC)
CS = coupe sport (3.0CS, 630CS)
e = eta (economy) engine in North America (325e, 528e)
GTR = Grand touring racing (M3GTR)
i = injection (740i, 635CSi, 318i, X5 3.0i); or international (2002ti)
L = long-wheelbase (740iL, 3.0L); or light (3.0CSL)
lux = luxury (2000tilux)
RS = rennsport (renn = racing) (700RS)
s/S = sport (3.0s, 325es, X5 4.6is); also denotes coupe body in North America (325is)
t/T = touring; touring could mean hatchback (318ti), wagon (525iT), or sport versions of early models (2002tii)
td = turbodiesel (524td)
tds = intercooled turbodiesel (524tds)
X = all-wheel drive (325iX, 330xi)

Prefix
L = Luxury (L6, L7)
M = Motorsport (M1, M3, M5, M535, M6, M635)
X = Sport activity vehicle (X5)
Z = Roadsters or (Z1, Z3, Z8) or roadster-derived coupes (Z3 Coupe); or models developed by BMW Technik (Z13)
