Actually I thought Z was for BMW Technik technology demonstration vehicles like the Z1 and Z8. The Z3 being the exception. The Z cars tend to "test" something new like the composite Z1.

Anyway even the Z3 was available as a non-roadster (Z3 coupe and M Coupe).
