I change oil every 5k miles into the SII using Mobil 1 synthetic. Synthetic is really good stuff, and it might last for the duration, but I just can't bring myself to wait that long. Probably the real reason is that I enjoy doing it. Right or wrong, I really dont care - $40 every 6 months or so is cheap insurance, even if it is overkill.

The filter (on a 3.0i anyway) is a disposable cartridge that fits inside the resin housing; it has a big nut cast into it. If you DIY, do not forget to replace the copper crush/sealing washer (or at least fish it out of the filter - mine was stuffed inside it).

Engine heat, friction and combustion by-products all contribute to an oils lifespan. No engine is designed "not to change oil".

The car was designed to not change the oil.. Maybe it will affect the way the valves seat or something. I have the same problem like you.. I wanna do the change at 7k but dealer said you might as well throw you money out the window. -- Bradley

Is it under that very convenient, dome shaped cover just behind the LF head light and next to the ATF fluid? If so, I'm guessing it must be a drop in filter, not a spin on. I'm planning to do the first oil change myself at 5K and not wait for the maintenance light. I know it's synthetic oil, but I've got this thing about changing the oil sooner than 12 or 15K on a new engine.

Thanks.

Bob
