The crack in my windshield starts below the lower border, close to the screw that holds the border in place. I noticed it a day after the car was at the dealer for some other work. Later I read on this board somewhere that someone had their winshield replaced by the dealer caused it was installed improperly and possibly it cracked from coming down the car lift at the dealer.

I showed it to my dealer and they used a ball point pen to trace the crack and noticed a slight chip in the glass from which they concluded that the crack was caused from a rock which caused the chip, then the crack.

The chip is directly behind the thick metal part of the wiper blade, and I can't see any way how a rock could hit there hard enough. Also, it's below the hoodline which would also keep it protected.

Try tracing the crack with a sharp object to see if there is am impact chip in the glass.

Washed car today and noticed acrack in the windshield!
What is strange is that it runs from the lower border of the windshield, under the middle of the driver's wiper blade to 1" above and then 1" left.
Don't remember anything hitting the windshield this low-it is a very stange place for a crack and strange shape-no bulls-eye or spider web.
Could it be a defective windshield????
If I can't get BMW to accept it as defective glass(only 3 mo. old) how does insurance handle it???
