I live where there is snow and salt and cinders. I also go on gravel roads occasionally. The black plastic is there for a reason. I have chips and pits all over the black plastic (particularly in front of rear wheel, in back of front wheel, and lower front bumper), and it doesn't look bad unless you get really close. If you paint this area and use your vehicle for normal driving, unless you live in sunny CA, you will get pits and chips through the paint which will probably look ugly with the black showing through. Some say this hasn't happen to them, but consider it. Go see some used X5s and see if they have this problem in your driving area. Early prototypes of the X5 had black plastic cladding half way up the doors. At least they compromised a little.
