Gearshift indicator light (archive)

Question: Is the gearshift indicator light (the one that illuminates next to the gear: Park, Neutral, Reverse, Drive) supposed to stay lit up after the car is shut off? Mine stays on (the one next to the "P"). I go to start my car the next day, and the light is still on. BMW service is giving me different stories. Isn't this draining the battery?
