You might surf over to the rec.video.dbs and alt.dbs.echostar newsgroups to get more information on DirecTV and Dish respectively.

I've had Dish for a bunch of years (4? 5? more?), and have been very happy. If you are a sports nut, DirecTV seems to be the choice, since they have things like NFL Sunday Ticket. Dish may be a better choice for international programming, religious, educational. They're comparable otherwise.

Some folks think Dish has better customer service, others hate it. I'm neutral, but have had no major problems with them.

Of course, if the Echostar/Hughes merger goes through, it won't matter. It will all be DirecTV.

I left my cable company because they were charging a lot of money per month for poor service, crappy signal, bad technology, etc. Not much has changed since then.
