Dis has lost the functionality of 1 of their satellites, so they are comressing more on most cchannels to squeeze in the channels. They just lauched a new satellite within the last 4 weeks that will allow them to restore the picture to the original equal or better than direct-tv within the nect month or 2. Within 6 months, they will be sending up another satellite to allow for more stuff. If teh merger takes place, all local channels in all markets across the US could be made available, making dish/direct a direct competitor to cable tv in all markets, with better picture/sound and more channels for a lower price, + it would be available to even rural areas not serviced by cable. There is a strong lobby against this competition by cable companies. I am also amazed that broadcast channels seem to be opposed. Turner would have never thought to sell rights to his satellite distributed channel early on -- his advertisers would want as many people to see their ads across US as prossible. Now the channels CHARGE to rebroadcast their poor, weak signals so that many more people can get the signal. When did the broadcasters decide that they wanted to limit and CHARGE for the distribution of their commercial televison. I'd be pissed if I were an advertiser. Off my soapbox now.
