Mine makes the same sound when it starts after sitting a few days. Probably no oil pressure to the lifters for that brief momment at start up. Will bring it up at the next service unless someone else has info that says we need immediate attention.

I changed the oil today in my '01 4.4i at 5K. Can't wait for 15K - it's just against my religion to go that long. Maybe I'll come around, but not on a new engine.

I put in 8 quarts of Castrol Syntec and replaced the filter. It was a "Mann" filter from a BMW high performance shop here in town.

Everything was good. Engine started up, ran good. An hour or so later I drove it to a church meeting. Came out 90 minutes later, and turned the key. I swear I heard the tiniest bit of "rod knock" for less than a second when the engine started up. Then it went away. I shut it off, restarted, and no noise.

It is now sitting in the garage with a big note on the console to remind me in the morning to "listen for knock". Will post update tomorrow.

Has anyone experienced this? I can't imagine what I might have done. It was a routine oil change, and the filter certainly isn't the type to have a valve to prevent pressure/volume bleed down.

Thanks.

Bob
