memory problems similar but different from yours. Because the whole key memory system (seats,steering, rear mirrors, and climate) was a mess I had that feature de-programmed. For the next 3 months the climate control would remember what the settings were from TWO TIMES before. Then after the X-5 sat for ten days while on vacation the climate memory somehow fixed itself. For now, it works fine. Your problem could, very well, be tied to the key memory problems that have been quite common.

The first step would be to have the dealer totally reprogram the key memory system. Then watch it for a while to see if it corrects itself.
