I had a similar problem for the first 15K miles. According to my dealer, it is not unusual before the first oil change/service, but should end thereafter. I haven't checked since the last service - I've driven the vehicle about 2K, so will check soon.

I have a 15 month old X-5 (1991) with around 18,000 miles on the 3.0 engine. I am burning around 1 quart of synthetic oil every 3000 miles or so. The dealer says this is normal. I have 3 friends with bimmers who have never added a single drop of oil. Is it really normal to burn this much oil?
