The idea of having wider rear tires is for added traction, on a rear wheel drive car. The idea still marginally holds true for the X5 because of the power bias to the rear wheels. One could argue that the 315's in the rear is overkill even for traction purposes. I'm sure that a 255-275 would easily suffice even for a X5 4.6's power.

I'm doing it almost completely on estetics. IMO the wider rear tires/wheels give a more aggressive look and a more meaty back end.

Hey guys. I have a question. What is the benefit of having wider tires in the rear? I want to get the Breyton Emotion 20inch rims but should I get the optional wider tires for the rear? Hmmm...does it look better? I assume the car will handle better (in dry conditions) but what about in the snow? Having too wide of a tire should affect the driving conditions (negatively) in snowy condition right? Do you think it's worth the few extra $$$? Thanks in advance.
