I did this for a living for 5 years (owned my own shop) and here is my advice for you based upon that experience...

Take it to a licensed and INSURED car stereo shop. I would do (and did) the same thing with this car. It is not worth the risk to do it yourself - pay the $75 and have them do it - if something goes wrong, they have insurance. It is much cheaper than replacing an airbag.

If you must do it yourself, I would first talk to your service manager and then I would probably pull the fuse for the airbags before I did any work. DON'T go and stick a test light/ohm meter on every wire you see. Identify the wire by sight (get the wiring diagram from the service department) and go from there...
